Solidarity for the Future

Reporting from IC 2006 in Warsaw, Poland!
Kicked off the opening of the conference by performing a traditional Austrian dance on stage wearing Dirndl and Lederhosen, the Austrian delegation is actively participating in sessions, representing our country in global village and the GN parties, and of course also having a great time! We are looking forward to bring back the learning and the stories.

And in case you happen to somehow have missed the promotion on AIESEC.net, you can follow IC LIVE at http://live.ic2006.pl. So check that out, and join all the IC delegates with Virtual Insanity! :)

Functional Fun

From the ER ICX corner in August, functional meetings with all LCs happened as follow-up from START, as well as discussing in more detailed about the current reality and the next steps. Here are some of the images:

Functional meeting ER ICX August (Graz)
The national ER team with the M&M combo (Martin and Matthias) in the Graz office for discussing ER/ICX matters

Unfortunately the meeting with Innsbruck were over Skype as Doris is in Innsbruck and Daniel is in Jakarta. Next time we'll have a photo of the D&D combo. :)

The Vienna guys having a special singing session after the meeting (I won't disclose what songs they were singing but you might be able to guess from theis pose?)

Functional meeting ER ICX August (Linz)
More talks about ER ICX in Linz

Also in the office in Linz, Yat Wan and Beb (who was there for PD meeting) tried on Dirndls which Michael borrowed for us (thanks Michael!), in preparation for representing Austria at IC2006 in Poland. Don't we look just like Österreicherin wearing Dirndl? :)

Journey to IMPACT

Is there a better way to start the year of National Team 06/07 blogging action than sharing the video shown at START 0607? :) The video shows some of the images and the journey we have been through to create the AIESEC in Austria Plan 2006-2006. IMPACT.

what one year mc does to you

see what one year mc can do to somebody: the aiesec dancing stars performance of the MC at Innsbrucks NK2

Wallfahrt ins Heilige Land Tirol

Zwei Bilder sagen mehr als viele Worte - especially if it is your sexy financer. Last weekend around half of your current MCc took the last chance to take a few days off.

Selber Schuld Kein Mitleid for everyone who did not participate, as weather, people and the programme were just great, you missed absolutely mad French guys, German girls, Upper-Austrian freaks and more.

usual MC training

remember who won the last boatrace - yes - the Innsbruck Team. However, with MC help. Here you can see one video of a training we usually have in the evening with MC and national support. We recruited Johnny Cavalero, a columbian boatrace champion as training partner... Have a look:

Getting ready for MC Takeover

While Striving for Excellence, as always, our MC started practising for the MC takeover soccer tournament. We got up with the chicken (sorry, don't know if that's the same as in German) and played so well that we still can expect to get invited from one or the other team that participates in the world championship starting in 2 days. After getting tired and dirty, the current leader team beat the future leader team (or girls' team) by one goal or so...

A lucid dream - the term after the focus areas (introduced at NK2)

The term after the focus areas will look quite different in Austria. But you can already pre-watch the status quo in one year by looking at one of the lucid dreams of the MC team.

Third MC subsidiary - ernsts blog?

blogging is no. 1 topic here in the MC. I recently was watching ernst while he was blogging. Due to a lack of experience (he didnt blog too much) I assisted him a bit. Suddenly I saw in his blogging space that he actually has his own blog with the inspiring name: The tasks as a financer

I was stunned.

However, I had to find out that the only posting he has in his blog is a posting from the MC blog. more than that: his blog IS the posting. check out his blog under http://httpmcaustriamyaiesecnet.blogspot.com/
(as well quite easy to remember)

it seems that ernst, when he blogged the first time faced some difficulties. To make it clear: blogging is not about creating a blog for each posting you do, but posting something at one blog. So blog to posting is like 1:x (description for financer).

stay tuned for news on httpmcaustriamyaiesecnet.blogspot.com - the tasks as financer. for information on blogging check this out

Alexis cultural experience - The Leverggase - REIMAGINE

Re-imagine!

Leberkäse schmeckt gut!

After 3 years of Austrian experiences and challenges, Alexis still did not feel prepared to take the biggest challenge ever - try a good Lebakassemmi!

But on Monday, hungry, challenged after a tough meeting with the male team members, she felt prepared to re-imagine her image of the wonderful leberkassemmi.

Look at her face, how she loves it!!!

Chairing at Czech NTM

Train trips…

So many of them. Always special for me since i am in aiesec. Never went so often on those trips. It’s always the same, i get sentimental. I get into this reflective mood. Because of the fact that usually when i am in a train I am on the way to something in aiesec or on the way back from something. Something special... an election, a conference...

Dont know whether you thought about that... how many reflections happen in trains,
how many thoughts are created in ÖBB trains, or trains abroad... I created a lot of thoughts in ÖBB, in Czech trains, ex-yugoslavian trains, bulgarian busses, spanish busses, italian pendolinos, dutch high speed trains... This time it was my chairing experience in the Czech Republic. I went there due to an invitation of Jarda, the current MCP. I got excited when he approached me at IPM... he told me about this meeting for transition of all local committee executives.
Not a real conference. But would be nice to have a chair – you could share your experiences – and people would be excited to get to know a PAI applicant.

I came there with the aim of making this “meeting” a real “conference”. I didnt go there mainly for reflection, didnt think too much about that. But in the end it was the best reflection exercise I could have had. It brought me away from the current conference stress in Austria. It brought me to deep talks. It brought me to a strong connection with Jarda, a person that I admire for his honesty, simplicity and inspiration. I am happy to have him as my friend... very happy.

AIESEC in the Czech Republic is a role model country. Passion and hard work. It’s amazing how much agenda points happened there. People go to conferences not because the MC is telling to do so but because of their
inner drive. Something that I am sometimes missing at home. Czechs have masses of conferences and are self driven – they want to achieve something and be great. My respect for that....

Charing gave me the chance to share my soul, my thoughts, the things that trigger my thoughts at the moment. It felt good to spread out some of that. It provided me with space to think about myself and the world around me.
I cannot put online everything i did there, but here you go with a small sum up of the things that I enjoyed...

  • the talks with jarda aside the lake, when the fog was coming closer and closer
  • being picked up at the trainstation, getting to know a bit about Czech history and looking at the beautiful city from this one point aside the metro station
  • being alone and czeching out praha
  • watching the water pipe guy dancing the mc role call
  • the reflection and session about leadership in the closing
  • Mr. Pink, Simon Bolivar and the rest of the OC gang
  • a Q&A session at 5 in the morning with one girl that i forgot the name
  • listening to Svetka (hope that i wrote that correctly)
  • playing "turn the lights on" and drinking about 8 different vodka, etc. in 5 minutes at one of the functional tracks during the mcp road show as well as experiencing OGSEX
  • being able to share my thoughts about the world
  • building deep connections with some...
thank you czechs!

Pure joy in me

Reinman Part One/Sixteen

Peter sagt: "Blog was!". Und wenn Peter das sagt? But the problem is more what to blog. I don't visit LCs, I don't own fish (my cat does not like them or likes them too much) and I don't know any gossip and I am not a financer.

Ok, I will try to write about my work, äh. Ok, about things that can make you a good (?!) IS coordinator. (btw. that's my job here)

First of all you have to adapt to AI's time sense. An answer to an email written within a month can't be a good answer.

Then the most important one: you don't need to look good. It's enough to look like Charlie Sheen or Pierce Brosnan (that's what the face recognition at myheritage.com tells me) or with beard like Chris Martin (even if told by a drunk person). (So this man here looks like Pierce Brosnan. Hollywood I come!)

Number three is be sportive. Even when you get beaten by female AIESECers in running (Kahlenberglauf 2005 lines 94 and 95) never give up. Or how else could it be that the small fat, bold, outside left is the best scorer for this season of the soccer team with the loudest average fans of whole vienna? (FC Breitenfeld)

And, yes, computer stuff. If you are able to switch on and off a computer, replace a broken hard disc and teach the MC how to write a article for the homepage you might already be overqualified for the job. You might already be so far ahead the MC that you can tell sell them everything you do as success (not that I would do that). The rest is up to your "I want to learn and develop myself and bla and so" attitude - you can learn anything you want, you are a part of this unmatched global thingy.

Before I close and bore you to death (that will be done in parts Two to Sixteen) the most important thing: Oh no, it does not matter if you are autistic. How come? I scored 33 points at this cool test telling me "Eighty percent of those diagnosed with autism or a related disorder scored 32 or higher. The test is not a means for making a diagnosis, however, and many who score above 32 and even meet the diagnostic criteria for mild autism or Asperger's report no difficulty functioning in their everyday lives." - I hope I am socially functioning :-D

The tasks as a Financer

Already quite a lot of times, people asked me curiously, what I am actually doing in the MC. What am I working on the entire year.
To give all people an overview the bloq is the right place to post more about it than my yearplan, that is by the way uploaded in the Austrian Community. Either people do not understand what stands behind the strategies and goals of my position or they never looked at it. Anyway I think it is the right time for describing the position of a Financer, that somehow always has to fight against this image of a boring job role.
In general the different positions in the MC do not differ so much on what everybody is working on. There are a lot of operational tasks to do, that unfortunately can hinder the important part of the job role a lot. In this regard Artur fights with visa issues and distribution of Marketing material, Alexis with recruitment calls and bringing closed minded people to conferences and Peter with fighting with Austrian burocracy and statutes and providing his picky team members with the right music.
The operational workload of the Financer is also a lot, but depends strongly on the way the financial management is organized, transferring money and collecting and controlling bills.
The other part, the more interesting one is the strategic development of our organisation. Every team member works on the improvement and new direction of different systems. Artur introducing the new partnership proposal, Alexis working on the competency model and Peter on Culture of Excellence.
When you look at my personal plan it is split into the sections routine tasks, new creation and MC stuff.
The routine tasks fall more under the operational tasks. But I would strongly deny that there is nothing to learn or that the tasks are not interesting. In the beginning of my term I tried to organize myself to create a tool that would allow me to always have Finance in Austria under control and would build the basis for decision taking. It happened quite often during this term that I was asked if we could invest money in LC visits and other travel costs, the new MC server or the conference payment for the National Support Body. Fast decisions have to be taken. The final responsible of the budget is the financer. But how much can you really trust your planned budget. Behind every income there is the risk, that the money cannot be raised or a partner will cancel the partnership, behind every cost is the risk that they increase because of price increases, higher conference costs or simply costs that we did not think about in the beginning of the term, when planning the budget. That means that with every decision taken it could have been the wrong one. Quite thrilling sometimes and I have to admit that there were times I was quite worried about a decision taken. In the end the Financer should of course strive for, that important projects can be realized and do not have to be given up because of the lack of financial resources.

I am quite satisfied with my job role, because I see for myself the freedom to strive forward issues and projects that I see as important for the organisation.
Without really having a clear picture I really wanted to work on the balanced scorecard or a similar steering tool for the organisation. This had been already something I was thinking about three years ago. Now also AI has taken up this method for their international planning. It had been a good feeling to be already in front at least with our thoughts. I am looking forward to see this tool developed by Reini in all LCs, and especially to see the benefit of it during NK2, when planning the next year.
The next thing that will be a highlight for me is to organize a task force for analysing the influences of the change of our corework for the different subsystem. In the beginning it was just meant for the financial area. Now we also want to use the moment to also analyse which level AIESEC in Austria has reached with the implementation of AIESEC XP. I am right now preparing the meetings, and I am very much looking forward to translate the outcomes into numbers and a financial long term plan for the next 5 years.
Besides these tasks I am a full member of the MC, even I am just half time, in the regard to I take part in conference development and decision taking. I was the conference manager for SOLUTION and the first contact person for two LCs. Decisions that have to be taken are discussed within the team and it is a great experience to work within a MC team, four people closely working together dedicating all their passion and enthusiasm for the organisation.
I would have never liked to miss this opportunity and I am looking forward to the next four months of our term.

spirit as key to success

sitting here in the LC Graz office I am wondering what the MC did wrong if i compare the space of the two offices... anyway.

Just wanted to report a bit about my stay here in Graz which so far has been really exciting. The whole visit to Graz started off with Lori and me defining objectives and setting an agenda for my two days stay in Styria. At the end of our call Lori said "I am going to take care about promoting the visit". It was quite funny afterwards when I read the E-Mail Lori wrote to all Graz members... some quotations:

"A big big event is taking place..." "Our NATIONAL president himself is coming" "Mr. P-eter.."

and it goes on in the same style. I think i never was announced like this and I had to laugh about it. I imagined myself being in the position of a newie receiving the mail, reading it, getting excited and then seeing me walking in the door in the LC office. Two scenarios of thoughts in the newies head:

1. This guy is really cool, he gives me the feeling that I could be president to.
2. It seems that Culture of Excellence didnt make its way up to the national office...

;-)

Well anyway, I just have to tell you some impressions that I had when I entered the Graz office for the first time after 2 years (my last time was actually a stay overnight together with 8 other facis in the beautiful office)... Looking at the walls with all pictures, quotes, etc. , looking at the people working, looking at other people dancing and having fun I just had one word that came into my mind for the environment:

spirit

I think it is a really healthy combination of chaos and order, of fun and seriousness that I found in Graz. For me it is a place, where I would feel comfortable working right away. The masses of things on the wall and other stuff somehow make sense as a whole. I am not that into Feng Shui, but if it is about creating a healthy environment then Graz managed that.

What did I do here... so here you go with some infos about the sessions that were run with LC Graz:

  • Culture of Excellence
We had a look at the Culture of LC Graz and tried to combine it with the resources of the CoE community at a global level. Although Austria is advanced in the implementation of the strategic triangle there is still some way to go. We ran exercises in order to find out more about the current culture of the LC and ways to ehance it. Value based cultural reviews, talent clustering and talent management, etc.

I really recommend that you have a look as well at the Culture of Excellence community to find out simple steps that you could take in your LC.

  • Membership Criteria
Tough one. But still an interesting and productive discussions with a bigger amount of Grazers ranging from newies to former EBs. There are still a lot of doubts and fears especially in the older generation about our strategic direction. Membership Criteria as such are there to ensure minimum standards in all LCs and a basic quality - but they are just the continuation and follow up of decisions we took regarding culture of excellence, Aiesec experience and changes in our identity.

Doubts are still there. And thats not bad at all. What we need to do is to look at the holistic picture when we are talking about membership criteria. Its not the membership criteria alone that are important, one has to look at them in context of all other strategic developments. On the other hand we have to take care about how we are communicating our strategies, especially when it comes to culture of excellence.

A conclusion was reached, and thats what the goal was about.

  • Socializing
    They are able to discuss.
    They are able to party.
No further comment needed, just that I heard some more rumours about Arturs visit here. Will keep you updated in my personal blog.

  • Team Management
We'll run through a team management session, which consists of 8 key lessons I learned throughout my experiences in AIESEC. Tell you more about it later...

  • LC Development
AI*s model to develop LCs on a long term perspective. I am really looking forward to this one, which consists of several steps, including an identity and strategy refresh, external environment assessment as well as looking at the role Graz plays but as well could play in the society.

  • Finally we will have a train preparation of Dora and Angie who take part in the fabulous delegation Austria will send to Expros in the Czech Republic...

  • Other cool stuff: got "21st century citizen" - the book AIESEC wrote which served as the basis for defining the four change agent characteristics. Heard a lot about it, but never saw it. Graz had it and I am looking forward to reading it!

That was a long post, but I had the feeling to write it. Its a cool team and a cool LC and I am enjoying my time here...

and here we go with some pics:

MC Austria establishes subsidiary...

at least blogwise.... I decided to establish an individual blog... i just wanted to give myself some space for self reflection which is not always related to aiesec. the last few weeks triggered some new developments in myself and i feel the need to let them out somewhere.... find it under the following link...

in case you are interested to read and share some stories...

love, peter

Dreams or Nightmares?

Let's take the media development of the last couple of years... Internet, Google, Amazon, etc. .... some interesting and exciting stuff has happened and the world looks quite different now in comparison to the early 90s. Let's take the current developments in consideration and project them for the next couple of years. Some clever guys brought together this short movie on media in 2014.

It's scary.

Is it reality? Is it a dream? Or a nightmare? Have a look...

Not losing the dream

Sent.

It lasted a long long time until a really had the guts to push the send button. There are some moments in our lifes when a small click is the final thing that makes the difference. I finally decided to run for president of aiesec international for the next term.

Throughout the last few weeks I was running through a quite challenging self discovery process. Let me share some of the thoughts that went through my head...

AI?, strategic thinking skills, far away, what happens to my friends in Austria?, unique chance, risk?, take it, too old?, about a quarter of my life consumed and probably a tenth lived – so why not?, why not PAI?, too selfish and arrogant, am I the right leader for this organization?, what is your vision Peter?, will I be able to share it?, will I be qualified?, knowledge, passion, connection, sadness, loneliness, vision, believe, risk, feelings, emotions, spirit, love, do it – JUST DO IT

In the end I believe that we as individuals are very often lacking the final step: Being afraid to fail an exam and therefore missing a life-changing conference, thinking that we are to weak and running away, thinking the girl doesn't like us and letting her go home with this random striker, not applying because of insecurity, saying no and dreaming yes.... We are so close to succeed but the last 1% that is missing we are so much afraid of. We are lacking the final "click"...

I had a nice chat with mate some days ago - maybe it's as well the culture of extreme self-reflection that AIESEC has at the moment. A culture were you question everything you do, question your identity, your actions, your thoughts... Don't get me wrong - nothing bad about it. What we just need to make sure that we have a culture of self-reflection, not a culture of doubts and not at all a culture of indifference. Self reflection should lead us to the point where we are more secure about who we actually are - that doesnt mean that we all the time are 100% sure where we go... but it is the first step...

Let's not be afraid of ourselves, let's not be afraid of the consequences. Why shouldnt we take risks? Why shouldnt we fuck something up? Whatever the outcome might be, we have learned something...

Who's stealing our dreams or where do we lose them?

As the year ended and I stept in to the new journey of 2006, I had deep thoughts on what should this year be about? What would be my next steps, what should be my next experiences?

...realised it is not easy, realised in the world today it is more and more dificult to find myself... and even more difficult to follow my true self... With every talk, with every story, with every sign, I am driven in different directions, chosing different courses, playing different roles... untill I get tired and lost and confused by this cheep therter play and started the JOURNEY TOWARDS MYSELF...

I'm ask my self WHO AM I? WHO IS MYSELF? and WHAT DO I DREAM OF? WHAT HAVE I ALWAYS DREAMED OF? and more WHAT IS IT THAT ALWAYS MAKE MY BLOOD RUSH AND MY HEART BIT FASTER?

After finding the answers to this questions... everything should be easy but is actually not...cause just than THE FIGHT STARTS and the bigger question:

ARE YOU STRONG ENOUGH TO FIGHT FOR WHAT YOU CAN BECOME?

ARE YOU STRONG ENOUGH TO FIGHT FOR YOUR DREAMS...

...Or are you going to give up , ending up part of a generation that dreamed it could revolutionise the world, but ended up giving in to "reality"?
