Reinman Part One/Sixteen

Peter sagt: "Blog was!". Und wenn Peter das sagt? But the problem is more what to blog. I don't visit LCs, I don't own fish (my cat does not like them or likes them too much) and I don't know any gossip and I am not a financer.

Ok, I will try to write about my work, äh. Ok, about things that can make you a good (?!) IS coordinator. (btw. that's my job here)

First of all you have to adapt to AI's time sense. An answer to an email written within a month can't be a good answer.

Then the most important one: you don't need to look good. It's enough to look like Charlie Sheen or Pierce Brosnan (that's what the face recognition at myheritage.com tells me) or with beard like Chris Martin (even if told by a drunk person). (So this man here looks like Pierce Brosnan. Hollywood I come!)

Number three is be sportive. Even when you get beaten by female AIESECers in running (Kahlenberglauf 2005 lines 94 and 95) never give up. Or how else could it be that the small fat, bold, outside left is the best scorer for this season of the soccer team with the loudest average fans of whole vienna? (FC Breitenfeld)

And, yes, computer stuff. If you are able to switch on and off a computer, replace a broken hard disc and teach the MC how to write a article for the homepage you might already be overqualified for the job. You might already be so far ahead the MC that you can tell sell them everything you do as success (not that I would do that). The rest is up to your "I want to learn and develop myself and bla and so" attitude - you can learn anything you want, you are a part of this unmatched global thingy.

Before I close and bore you to death (that will be done in parts Two to Sixteen) the most important thing: Oh no, it does not matter if you are autistic. How come? I scored 33 points at this cool test telling me "Eighty percent of those diagnosed with autism or a related disorder scored 32 or higher. The test is not a means for making a diagnosis, however, and many who score above 32 and even meet the diagnostic criteria for mild autism or Asperger's report no difficulty functioning in their everyday lives." - I hope I am socially functioning :-D

The tasks as a Financer

Already quite a lot of times, people asked me curiously, what I am actually doing in the MC. What am I working on the entire year.
To give all people an overview the bloq is the right place to post more about it than my yearplan, that is by the way uploaded in the Austrian Community. Either people do not understand what stands behind the strategies and goals of my position or they never looked at it. Anyway I think it is the right time for describing the position of a Financer, that somehow always has to fight against this image of a boring job role.
In general the different positions in the MC do not differ so much on what everybody is working on. There are a lot of operational tasks to do, that unfortunately can hinder the important part of the job role a lot. In this regard Artur fights with visa issues and distribution of Marketing material, Alexis with recruitment calls and bringing closed minded people to conferences and Peter with fighting with Austrian burocracy and statutes and providing his picky team members with the right music.
The operational workload of the Financer is also a lot, but depends strongly on the way the financial management is organized, transferring money and collecting and controlling bills.
The other part, the more interesting one is the strategic development of our organisation. Every team member works on the improvement and new direction of different systems. Artur introducing the new partnership proposal, Alexis working on the competency model and Peter on Culture of Excellence.
When you look at my personal plan it is split into the sections routine tasks, new creation and MC stuff.
The routine tasks fall more under the operational tasks. But I would strongly deny that there is nothing to learn or that the tasks are not interesting. In the beginning of my term I tried to organize myself to create a tool that would allow me to always have Finance in Austria under control and would build the basis for decision taking. It happened quite often during this term that I was asked if we could invest money in LC visits and other travel costs, the new MC server or the conference payment for the National Support Body. Fast decisions have to be taken. The final responsible of the budget is the financer. But how much can you really trust your planned budget. Behind every income there is the risk, that the money cannot be raised or a partner will cancel the partnership, behind every cost is the risk that they increase because of price increases, higher conference costs or simply costs that we did not think about in the beginning of the term, when planning the budget. That means that with every decision taken it could have been the wrong one. Quite thrilling sometimes and I have to admit that there were times I was quite worried about a decision taken. In the end the Financer should of course strive for, that important projects can be realized and do not have to be given up because of the lack of financial resources.

I am quite satisfied with my job role, because I see for myself the freedom to strive forward issues and projects that I see as important for the organisation.
Without really having a clear picture I really wanted to work on the balanced scorecard or a similar steering tool for the organisation. This had been already something I was thinking about three years ago. Now also AI has taken up this method for their international planning. It had been a good feeling to be already in front at least with our thoughts. I am looking forward to see this tool developed by Reini in all LCs, and especially to see the benefit of it during NK2, when planning the next year.
The next thing that will be a highlight for me is to organize a task force for analysing the influences of the change of our corework for the different subsystem. In the beginning it was just meant for the financial area. Now we also want to use the moment to also analyse which level AIESEC in Austria has reached with the implementation of AIESEC XP. I am right now preparing the meetings, and I am very much looking forward to translate the outcomes into numbers and a financial long term plan for the next 5 years.
Besides these tasks I am a full member of the MC, even I am just half time, in the regard to I take part in conference development and decision taking. I was the conference manager for SOLUTION and the first contact person for two LCs. Decisions that have to be taken are discussed within the team and it is a great experience to work within a MC team, four people closely working together dedicating all their passion and enthusiasm for the organisation.
I would have never liked to miss this opportunity and I am looking forward to the next four months of our term.

spirit as key to success

sitting here in the LC Graz office I am wondering what the MC did wrong if i compare the space of the two offices... anyway.

Just wanted to report a bit about my stay here in Graz which so far has been really exciting. The whole visit to Graz started off with Lori and me defining objectives and setting an agenda for my two days stay in Styria. At the end of our call Lori said "I am going to take care about promoting the visit". It was quite funny afterwards when I read the E-Mail Lori wrote to all Graz members... some quotations:

"A big big event is taking place..." "Our NATIONAL president himself is coming" "Mr. P-eter.."

and it goes on in the same style. I think i never was announced like this and I had to laugh about it. I imagined myself being in the position of a newie receiving the mail, reading it, getting excited and then seeing me walking in the door in the LC office. Two scenarios of thoughts in the newies head:

1. This guy is really cool, he gives me the feeling that I could be president to.
2. It seems that Culture of Excellence didnt make its way up to the national office...

;-)

Well anyway, I just have to tell you some impressions that I had when I entered the Graz office for the first time after 2 years (my last time was actually a stay overnight together with 8 other facis in the beautiful office)... Looking at the walls with all pictures, quotes, etc. , looking at the people working, looking at other people dancing and having fun I just had one word that came into my mind for the environment:

spirit

I think it is a really healthy combination of chaos and order, of fun and seriousness that I found in Graz. For me it is a place, where I would feel comfortable working right away. The masses of things on the wall and other stuff somehow make sense as a whole. I am not that into Feng Shui, but if it is about creating a healthy environment then Graz managed that.

What did I do here... so here you go with some infos about the sessions that were run with LC Graz:

  • Culture of Excellence
We had a look at the Culture of LC Graz and tried to combine it with the resources of the CoE community at a global level. Although Austria is advanced in the implementation of the strategic triangle there is still some way to go. We ran exercises in order to find out more about the current culture of the LC and ways to ehance it. Value based cultural reviews, talent clustering and talent management, etc.

I really recommend that you have a look as well at the Culture of Excellence community to find out simple steps that you could take in your LC.

  • Membership Criteria
Tough one. But still an interesting and productive discussions with a bigger amount of Grazers ranging from newies to former EBs. There are still a lot of doubts and fears especially in the older generation about our strategic direction. Membership Criteria as such are there to ensure minimum standards in all LCs and a basic quality - but they are just the continuation and follow up of decisions we took regarding culture of excellence, Aiesec experience and changes in our identity.

Doubts are still there. And thats not bad at all. What we need to do is to look at the holistic picture when we are talking about membership criteria. Its not the membership criteria alone that are important, one has to look at them in context of all other strategic developments. On the other hand we have to take care about how we are communicating our strategies, especially when it comes to culture of excellence.

A conclusion was reached, and thats what the goal was about.

  • Socializing
    They are able to discuss.
    They are able to party.
No further comment needed, just that I heard some more rumours about Arturs visit here. Will keep you updated in my personal blog.

  • Team Management
We'll run through a team management session, which consists of 8 key lessons I learned throughout my experiences in AIESEC. Tell you more about it later...

  • LC Development
AI*s model to develop LCs on a long term perspective. I am really looking forward to this one, which consists of several steps, including an identity and strategy refresh, external environment assessment as well as looking at the role Graz plays but as well could play in the society.

  • Finally we will have a train preparation of Dora and Angie who take part in the fabulous delegation Austria will send to Expros in the Czech Republic...

  • Other cool stuff: got "21st century citizen" - the book AIESEC wrote which served as the basis for defining the four change agent characteristics. Heard a lot about it, but never saw it. Graz had it and I am looking forward to reading it!

That was a long post, but I had the feeling to write it. Its a cool team and a cool LC and I am enjoying my time here...

and here we go with some pics:

Dreams or Nightmares?

Let's take the media development of the last couple of years... Internet, Google, Amazon, etc. .... some interesting and exciting stuff has happened and the world looks quite different now in comparison to the early 90s. Let's take the current developments in consideration and project them for the next couple of years. Some clever guys brought together this short movie on media in 2014.

It's scary.

Is it reality? Is it a dream? Or a nightmare? Have a look...
